CUPL Professor emeritus Jiang Ping, born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1930, is a prominent Chinese jurist, who served as CUPL president from 1988 to 1990. From 1948 to 1949, he studied in the Journalism Department of Yan Jing University (the predecessor to Peking University). From 1951 to 1956, he studied at Moscow University Law School. Professor Jiang is an academic pioneer in the field of civil and commercial legal science. His notable contributions include the following: participant in the enactment of “General Provisions of the Civil Law”; appointment as chief drafter of “Trust Law,” “Contract Law,” “Property Law” and “Civil Code”; compilation supervisor of “Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China.”

During his distinguished academic career, Professor Jiang Ping has delivered lectures at leading universities, including: Ghent University (Beligum); Hong Kong University (China); Rome University (Tor Vergata, Italy); Aoyama Gakuin University (Japan); and, Columbia University (U.S.A.). He has been bestowed an honorary juridical studies doctorate by Ghent University and appointed honorary professor of jurisprudence by Catholic University of Peru.

Professor Jiang is currently a mentor for PhD students in civil and commercial law. He also serves as chairperson of China Law Society’s Comparative Law Institute and president of the Beijing Arbitration Commission.
