Civil Law Institute

 

The Civil Law Institute was formerly known as the “Teaching and Research Section of the Civil Law” of the previous Department of Law in China University of Political Science and Law (also known as the "Teaching and Research Section of the Civil and Commercial Law"). The Teaching and Research Section of the Civil Law was renamed the Civil Law Institute when the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School was established in 2002.


There are 18 faculty members in the Civil Law Institute, including 7 professors, 9 associate professors and 2 lecturers, among whom 16 have Ph.D. degrees. Most of the faculty members have the experience of studying abroad, such as in Germany, Italy, the United States, Britain, Canada, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and other countries. Many of them are proficient in English, German, Italian, Russian, Latin and other languages.


The Civil Law Institute not only undertakes 3 basic compulsory courses for undergraduates, namely Principles of Civil Law I: General Introduction to Civil Law, Principles of Civil Law II: Debt Law, Principles of Civil Law III: Property Law, but also elective courses for undergraduates, namely Principles of Civil Law IV: Family Law and Succession Law, Civil Law Practice, Case Study on Real Rights in Civil Law, Case Study on Creditor's Rights in Civil Law, Civil Law Seminar, Comparative Contract Law, Roman Law, International Civil Law , etc. In recent years, the Institute has also actively explored Gutatchtenstil courses, launching the new course, Basic Analysis of Claim Right, for undergraduates. In addition, it also offers for Master and PhD students such courses as General Principles of Civil Law, Property Law, Debt Law, Family Law and Succession Law, Tort Liability Law and Legal Methodology, etc. The faculty members are highly qualified. Among them, 3 to 5 teachers are usually shortlisted in the previous awards of the "Top 10 Most Popular Teachers for Undergraduates" in China University of Political Science and Law, and 1 to 2 are usually selected.


In terms of the scientific research, the faculty members have recently undertaken more than 10 national research projects such as major projects, key projects, general projects, andpost-funded projects funded by the National Social Science Fund, as well as more than 10 provincial and ministerial research projectssuch as the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Project of the Ministry of Education, National Rule of Law and Legal Theory Research Project of the Ministry of Justice, and the Beijing Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Project. In recent years, in addition to publishing more than 30 monographs, the faculty members have also compiled textbooks such as Civil Law, General Principles of Civil Law, General Principles of Obligation Law, Obligation Law, Property Law, Contract Law, Tort Law, Selected Cases of Property Law, Selected Cases of Family Law and Succession law, etc. And they have published more than 50 papers in national authoritative and key journals of law. Besides, they have won important awards such as the Qian Duansheng Legal Research Achievement Award and Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Award of the Ministry of Justice.


In terms of academic exchanges, the faculty members attach great importance to the exchanges and cooperation with civil law scholars at home and abroad. In the past five years, they have held nearly 10 national academic conferences and 3 international academic conferences.
