Dean of the University of Pennsylvania Law School visited CCELS and Held a LL.M. Program Talk

On the afternoon of November 6, 2019, Professor Theodore Ruger, Dean of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Elise Kraemer, Executive Director of Graduate Programs, Laura Tepper, Director of External Relations, Yao Yuan, Director of Penn International Development (Asia), and Ni Xudong, President of Penn Law Club China, visited CCELS.


“China-US Legal Education Dialogue” Symposium


First, on the subject of “China-US Legal Education Dialogue”, the delegation from the Penn University delegation held a symposium with the teachers’ representatives from our college. The symposium was chaired by Professor Yu Fei, Executive Vice Dean. On behalf of the academy, he extended a warm welcome to Dean Theodore Ruger and his colleagues. He introduced the representatives of CCELS and hopes that the dialogue would enhance the understanding between the two law schools and work together to promote exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States in legal education. Dean Theodore Ruger thanked CCELS for the warm hospitality. He briefly described Penn Law School and well-known professors in related disciplines, and expressed his hope for future cooperation with the CCELS. Vice Dean Yang Xiuqing and Vice Dean Liu Jifeng introduced the internationalization of law education at CCELS from the perspective of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching, and exchanged views on the construction of internationalized courses. The participants from both sides had friendly and in-depth exchanges on issues such as cooperation in advanced disciplines, training of law-based talents, curriculum for law majors, improvement of the academic writing ability of law students, publication of international academic papers, and diversity of teachers. Through the discussion, both sides stated that this dialogue is very enlightening to the legal education work and reached a consensus that the training of legal talents is a systematic project that requires the joint efforts of all parties. In the future, the two parties will strengthen dialogue and cooperation in teaching and scientific research and promote exchanges between China and the United States through legal education exchanges.

Also present at the meeting were Li Jianwei, Director of the Commercial Law Institute, Professor Wang Yong, Chen Jingshan, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of CUPL, Ma Gengxin, Deputy Director of the Commercial Law Institute, Deputy Director Zheng Jianing, Deputy Director Zhu Xiaojuan, Associate Professor Zhao Binghao, Associate Professor Zhu Mingzhe, Deputy Director of the Comparative Law Institute at the College of Comparative Law, and Yan Jingjing, Director of the CCELS Foreign Affairs Office.

Later, Dean Theodore Ruger gave a keynote speech to law students on “Legal Education in the United States: Status, Challenges, and Future”. The lecture was chaired by Professor Yu Fei, and reviewed by Associate Professor Zhao Binghao. During the speech, Theodore Ruger explained the importance of comparative law and the interdisciplinary perspective for legal professionals, and introduced some topics which students were interested in, such as the advantages and characteristics of Penn Law School, the relationship between Penn Law School and Wharton School. He welcomed the CUPL students to Penn Law School for exchanges and further studies, and had interaction with the students. The atmosphere was warm.

Then, Ms. Elise Kraemer, Executive Director of the Graduate School of the Penn Law School, gave a lecture on the Penn Law's LL.M. Program. She introduced the teachers, professional orientation, curriculum, application process and the unique Wharton Business and Law Certificate Project of Penn Law School to the students. Through the Power Point, Elise Kraemer vividly displayed University of Pennsylvania and historical and cultural characteristics of the city, Philadelphia. She also answered the questions raised by students one by one.

During their stay, Dean Theodore Ruger and his colleagues accompanied by the student interpreter, visited Qian Duansheng Memorial Hall.
